Harlow actually comprises Harlow New Town and Old Harlow. The New Town was built after WWII to allow for the overflow from London. At that point, the name Old Harlow was coined. Old Harlow has been settled since Mesolithic times, as evidenced by many artifacts unearthed from that period. The New Town was the location of Britain's first pedestrian precinct, and also where the first modern-style residential tower block was built - "The Lawn" was constructed in 1951 and is now a Grade II listed building.
